bare balance

Our approach to social responsibility is simple: to balance the needs of economic progress with those of our people, poultry and planet, without compromise. It’s what we call our “four Ps” of social value, all interdependent elements where the well being of one impacts the vitality of the other three.

 People
Every person has the same basic needs: food, water, shelter and security. Just BARE chicken provides the low-fat, high-protein nutrition necessary to maintain a balanced diet and improve human health. Our commitment to people extends beyond the dinner table – we also support sustainable causes like bike sharing, food banks and community gardens that promote healthy lifestyles. Poultry
In 2011, we became certified under the American Humane Certified® Farm Program for our care.

Under this program, all of our practices are audited, starting with our hatchery, then moving to the independent family farmers who raise our chickens in safe, clean and cage-free barns; and following the chickens through catching, transportation, slaughter and processing.

 Planet
Nearly every resource that sustains life on Earth comes from nature, so maintaining a thriving ecosystem is critical to our survival. Just BARE has led our industry by being one of the first brands to complete a life cycle of its products, in order to set benchmarks for environmental impact and process improvement. We're committed to creating a more sustainable product – from leaner packaging to smarter transportation and everywhere in between. For example, even our feed is green. We add wholesome grain by-products from local bakeries. This practice provides a nutritious food source for our chickens while eliminating the wasteful disposal of these valuable resources. Progress
Thriving businesses foster strong communities, and our success yields more than just a financial return for shareholders. Our success supports the livelihoods of hundreds of employees and business partners, their families, and the communities in which we, and our customers, live and work. But we've got more to do. In order to give you the best, we will never rest. Our sustainability team is working hard to research and develop even more ways to reduce our environmental impact, be a socially responsible brand, and continue to provide wholesome, healthy chicken for you and your family.

life cycle assessment

In 2010, we conducted a product life cycle assessment (or LCA for short) on our Just BARE boneless skinless chicken breasts.  Its purpose: to help us understand the environmental impacts of our products - throughout their entire life cycles - and identify areas for improvement.

In partnership with the Carbon Trust, we have placed our commitment on every package as demonstrated by the presence of the Carbon Reduction Label.

And this information is being used to serve a greater good.  GNP Company - the mother hen company behind Just BARE - was one of 62 companies that measured greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for products and supply chains by road testing a new global framework that is part of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Initiative.  The line of Just BARE products was measured as part of this road test. Read the official news release from WRI (World Resources Institute).

Following is a look at sources of carbon emissions released during the making of our Just BARE boneless skinless breasts.

carbon footprints

Here are the carbon footprints of some (but not all) Just BARE products sold in grocery stores. We launched new products since the lifecycle assessment was done, so another one will need to be completed before we can report on all of our products.

Carbon footprints are reported as carbon dioxide equivalent (gCO2e) per functional unit (equals a 4-ounce serving, the USDA’s recommended serving size.)

carbon reduction commitment

Just BARE is one of the first U.S. food brands and the only U.S. poultry brand working with the Carbon Trust to gain approval to use the Carbon Reduction Label.

In partnership with the Carbon Trust, we've certified a select range of our products. And the Carbon Reduction Label - that is displayed on every Just BARE package - demonstrates our commitment to getting better.

“Just BARE is leading sustainability in the food sector with their support of and use of our Carbon Reduction Label.  Only companies who have measured and certified the carbon footprint of their products and are committed to reducing carbon emissions can use the label.”  - Carbon Trust LLC

renewable energy

Working with Renewable Choice Energy, Just BARE supports the development of more sustainable energy by buying renewable energy certificates (or RECs, also commonly called renewable energy credits).  A REC represents one megawatt-hour (MWh) of clean energy that's added to the power grid.  We purchase RECs in a quantity equal to the electricity consumed during the making of our Just BARE products.

The funds generated through the purchase of these RECs are used to support further development of clean energy facilities.  And, while RECs are a good way to support renewable energy, we know we must also continue to reduce our dependence on and use of fossil fuels for lasting climate change.
