Chicken Welfare

What does American Human Certified ™ mean for Just Bare® fresh chicken?

American Humane Certified™ is a trusted, third-party program focused on animal welfare. It’s based on the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, which cover things like access to food and water, comfort, good health, the ability to move naturally, and freedom from fear or distress. The standards are developed and regularly reviewed by veterinarians and animal welfare experts to reflect current research and best practices.

Our Just Bare® fresh products are American Humane Certified™ because they come from chickens raised by family farm partners who participate in annual audits. Our Just Bare® organic products don’t carry the American Humane Certified™ label, but they come from certified organic farms that follow strict animal welfare standards under the National Organic Program.

These certifications are one more way we stay accountable and care for our chickens—and for the families who trust us.

How does Just Bare® care for its chickens?

Caring for our chickens is something we take seriously at every step. From breeding and hatching through processing, their health and well-being are a top priority. That means proper nutrition, attentive veterinary care, and housing designed to keep them healthy and comfortable. Our practices are guided by experienced veterinarians and animal welfare experts, and we have a zero tolerance for any mistreatment. Simply put, doing right by our chickens is part of doing right by your family.

What do you feed Just Bare® chickens?

Our chickens are fed a nutritionally balanced diet designed by experienced nutritionists to support their health and well-being. The feed includes ingredients like corn, soybean meal, vitamins, and minerals—nothing unnecessary. We don’t use antibiotics, added hormones or steroids, or arsenicals. It’s thoughtful, wholesome nutrition that helps produce chicken you can trust on your table.

Are Just Bare® chickens raised cage free?

Yes. Our chickens are never raised in cages. They’re free to move around in modern, climate-controlled barns where they’re protected from the elements and outside threats. These carefully managed environments help reduce stress and support their overall health, while also maintaining strict biosecurity standards. It’s a thoughtful balance of freedom, comfort, and care—because how our chickens are raised matters.

Process/Preparation

What does “no antibiotics ever” mean for Just Bare® chicken?

When we say, “no antibiotics ever,” we mean it—our chickens are never given antibiotics at any point in their lives, from before they hatch through the time they’re raised. This is a USDA-regulated label claim, so it has a very specific meaning.

If a chicken ever needs antibiotics to stay healthy, our veterinary team makes that call and the bird is cared for appropriately—but it’s removed from the Just Bare® program and never sold as Just Bare®. We believe doing the right thing for the animal always comes first. That commitment helps us deliver chicken families can trust, while continuing to look for responsible ways to reduce antibiotic use across the industry.

Why doesn’t Just Bare® say “hormone-free” on the package?

All animals – including chickens and people—have hormones naturally in their bodies, so it wouldn’t be accurate to say chicken is “hormone-free.” That’s why you won’t see that phrase on our packaging.

What you will see is “no added hormones.” That simply means no hormones or steroids are ever used in raising our chickens. In fact, hormones and steroids aren’t approved for use in poultry by the USDA at all. It’s about being honest, accurate, and clear—so you know exactly what you’re buying.

What does “USDA organic” mean for Just Bare® chicken?

The USDA organic seal means Just Bare® organic chicken meets strict national standards and is verified by an independent, USDA-accredited certifier. That includes chickens raised on certified organic farms, fed 100% organic feed, and never given antibiotics. Animal health and welfare standards are followed, and chickens have access to the outdoors, along with clean, comfortable indoor barns designed to keep them healthy and safe.

You may see “access to outdoors” instead of “free-range.” Our chickens can go outside when conditions are safe but also have protected indoor spaces to reduce risks from extreme weather, predators, and illness.

It’s all about high standards, careful oversights, and farming practices you can feel good about.

What does “up to X% retained water” mean on the label?

We’re not adding water to your chicken. During processing, water is used to quickly cool and clean the meat, and as it cools, chicken naturally retains a small amount of that moisture. The “up to X% retained water” statement simply tells you how much water is naturally held in the product you’re buying.

We follow USDA standards and work to keep retained water as low as possible. Because it can vary by cut, the amount is always clearly listed on the package—so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Are arsenicals used in raising Just Bare® chickens?

No. Arsenicals have never been used in Just Bare® flocks. Arsenicals are compounds that contain arsenic and were once used in the past to support bird health, but they’re no longer allowed in the US poultry industry. We don’t use them—plain and simple.

Does Just Bare® fresh chicken contain any added ingredients?

Our Just Bare® fresh organic chicken is just that—100% chicken with no added solutions or ingredients. That means no added salt or water, no carrageenan or binding agents, and no preservatives.

When you see “all natural” on our packaging, it follows the USDA definition: no artificial ingredients, no artificial colors, no chemical preservatives, and minimal processing. It’s simple, honest food – just the way we believe it should be.

Does Just Bare® chicken come from chickens fed GMOs?

It depends on the product. Just Bare® organic chickens are fed a non-GMO diet, as required by USDA organic standards. For our Just Bare® Fresh and Prepared products, feed may include ingredients from genetically modified crops. The FDA regulates and monitors the safety of these feed ingredients, and we’re confident in their safety and wholesomeness.

It’s also important to know that chickens fed GM crops don’t produce meat that contains GMOs. Food scientists have found no nutritional or safety differences in chicken based on the type of feed used, and there’s been no health risk linked to eating chicken raised with GM feed. This is supported by years of research and global health organizations.

Our focus is always on safe, nutritious food—so you can choose what feels right for you with confidence.

Nutrition/Allergens

What should I know about the nutrition in Just Bare® products?

Just Bare® products are a great source of protein, which is one of the biggest things people look for at mealtime. Many of our options provide at least 10 grams of protein per serving, helping you feel good about what you’re putting on the table.

Is Just Bare® chicken gluten free?

Some Just Bare® products are, and some aren’t—so it’s important to know the difference. Our fresh Just Bare® chicken is gluten free and produced in a gluten-free facility. Our breaded and prepared products do contain gluten, since they’re made with ingredients like wheat and are produced where gluten is present. We always recommend checking the package for ingredient details so you can choose what’s right for you.

Is Just Bare® chicken dairy free?

It depends on the product. Plain, fresh Just Bare® chicken is dairy free and produced in a dairy-free facility. This includes items like fresh chicken breasts, fillets, tenders, thighs, drumsticks, and whole birds when sold without marinades, seasonings, or coatings. Our prepared and breaded products may contain dairy and are made in facilities where dairy is present, so it’s always best to check the package if dairy is a concern for your household.

Are allergens present at Just Bare® manufacturing facilities?

Yes. Both our fresh and prepared products are made in facilities where common allergens may be present, including milk, egg, wheat, soy, and sesame. While we follow strict handling and safety practices, we always recommend checking the ingredient statement and allergen information on the package if allergies are a concern for your family.

Food Prep

What’s the best way to safely handle and prepare Just Bare® chicken?

A few simple food-safety habits go a long way. Keep raw chicken refrigerated or frozen until you’re ready to use it and thaw it in the refrigerator or microwave. Always keep raw chicken separate from other foods, and wash your hands, utensils, and surfaces after handling it. Cook thoroughly, keep hot foods hot, and refrigerate leftovers promptly. These small steps help keep mealtime safe and stress-free.

What does the sell-by date printed on the package mean?

The code printed on the package is the sell-by date. It lets retailers know when the product should be sold for best quality, and it helps ensure you’re bringing home chicken that’s fresh and ready to enjoy.

What’s the safest way to store fresh and leftover Just Bare® chicken?

Store fresh chicken in the refrigerator or freezer until you’re ready to use it. Once cooked, keep hot foods hot and refrigerate leftovers as soon as possible. If leftovers can’t be refrigerated right way, it’s best to discard them. These easy steps help keep your food safe.

How do I know the claims on the Just Bare® label are truthful?

We get why that matters. Just Bare® follows strict labeling regulations set by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the agency that oversees the truthfulness and accuracy of labels on meat and poultry. In other words, the claims you see on our packages must meet USDA requirements—not just our own standards.

How should I cook Just Bare® chicken for the best flavor and texture?

Each Just Bare® prepared chicken product is designed to shine with a specific cooking method. We include cooking or heating instructions right on the package, and following those directions will give you the best flavor and texture every time. Some items are great in the oven, while others are best cooked in a skillet. When in doubt, the package is your best guide to getting dinner just right.

Just Bare® fresh chicken is incredibly versatile and works well with a variety of cooking methods, from grilling and baking to sautéing or pan-searing. How you cook it can depend on the cut, the recipe, or how you like to prepare meals at home. No matter the method, the key to great flavor, texture, and food safety is making sure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF. That final step ensures your fresh chicken is juicy, tender, and ready to enjoy.

What is the best way to cook Just Bare® prepared products?

We test our products and list the recommended cooking method right on the package whether it’s the air fryer, oven or microwave these instructions will help you get the best results.

What temperature should I cook Just Bare® chicken to?

All chicken should be cooked to a minimum temperature of 165ºF, no matter the cut. Using a food thermometer is the easiest way to be sure your chicken is fully cooked and safe to enjoy.

What is the difference between light and dark chicken meat?

Light meat is leaner with less fat and milder flavor, which makes it a go-to for quick, simple meals. Dark meat, found in cuts like thighs and drumsticks, has a richer flavor and stays especially juicy thanks to its slightly higher fat content. Both choices taste great and are versatile options for any meal.

Net carbs are calculated by taking total carbohydrates, then subtracting fiber and sugar alcohols. That’s why we always recommend looking at the full Nutrition Facts label to decide what works best for you and your family.
